A protester kicks a tear gas canister as he clashes with police officers during a demonstration after Peru's Congress backed the appointments of six members of the country's top court and a human rights ombudswoman in Lima. Congress named Lima city councilwoman Pilar Freitas as "defender of the people," a position tasked with monitoring and trying to resolve hundreds of conflicts over natural resource extraction in rural Peru.
