An aerial view of several kinds of rice plants designed to depict a Japanese oiran, or traditional courtesan, left, and actress Marilyn Monroe at ricefields in Inakadate town, Aomori prefecture. The annual event, known as ‘Tanbo art’, or ricefield art, is a project in which people plant different kinds of rice to create a giant picture in ricefields.
