GRAND PRIZE. "Waiting for Breakfast" by RANDY HOUGH. "My daughter Veronica and I were taking my friend from Orlando out for a morning shoot at Green Cay in Delray Beach. Veronica spotted the small hole in the palm tree and saw a chick moving in and out. We all set up and waited to see if the mother would return. When she flew in I started shooting my camera on continuous high and I was able to get the shot of her bringing the food to her baby."
ANIMALS, SECOND PLACE. "What's for Dinner" by ANDREW WOLFF. “While I was walking I noticed this little bird calling for mom. This bird was definitely hungry. I paused and within 30 seconds the mom came back. I was ready with my camera and fired away! When I got home and saw the image I was very pleased.”
ANIMALS, THIRD PLACE. "The Predators" by DRAGANA CONNAUGHTON. "This osprey just dove into the water as soon as I got to the beach. I threw my towel down and started shooting. Much to my surprise I had no idea it was a baby bonnethead or hammerhead shark. Once I reviewed the photos I was so excited to have captured this moment with accuracy, sharpness and proper exposure. Out of hundreds of attempts to capture this I was finally rewarded with what I think is a great shot of a bird of prey in action with a very special meal."
PLANTS, THIRD PLACE. "Red Amaryllis Bloom" by MATTHEW BARAN. "This particular Amaryllis was photographed in my backyard shortly after sunrise. I really enjoy shooting these flowers because they change so frequently during their blooming process. In the span of a single week four stunning flowers emerge from one small bulb. Each flower blossoms with its own flare, which makes for a great photograph."
PLANTS, HONORABLE MENTION."Water Art" by MARTIN COHEN. "We went for a Sunday walk at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach. Sunday was a very busy day, so the large scenic views were partially blocked by other visitors. I started to look for alternative subject matter and saw a field of water lilies, just under the edge of the walk. The camera was a Nikon Cool Pix P7000, lens was zoomed to 200mm , and exposure was underexposed by 0.30 EV, to bring some dark richness into the image. I had hopes of recreating Monet's Giverny, ended up with this result, hope you like it."
PLANTS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Lily" by KARI MACROSTIE
CLOSE-UPS, SECOND PLACE. "Frog Prince" by ELAINE KRUER. "When the palmettos are in bloom, the frogs take up positions amongst the leaves in hopes of catching the bugs that are attracted to the flowers. A flower had fallen on this frog's head, and it brought to mind the Princess and the Frog fairy tale of my youth. He is quite charming, and I think he just may be waiting for a kiss."
CLOSE-UPS, THIRD PLACE. "You Smell Gooood!" by ALBERT CHAVEZ. "This photo was taken in my backyard, I was focusing on a grasshopper on top of this firebush flower and all of a sudden, this tiny little mason bee appeared. I bought my first DSLR three years ago and just fell in love with photography. We are so fortunate to live in an area that's perfect for nature photography, from the beautiful beach sunrise to the gorgeous Lake Okeechobee sunset and a great array of animal wildlife. My favorite quote is 'Life is like a camera, just focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don't turn out just take another shot.' "
CLOSE-UPS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Contrasting Caterpillar" by KATHLEEN FOSSELMAN. "I found two of these caterpillars in my yard on different occasions and thought they were beautiful. This one really caught my eye because of the bright green contrast of the caterpillar on the red leaf. The sun was shining behind it and I needed a flash to highlight the front. I love walking around in the morning with my coffee looking at my plants and for colorful insects or different kinds of light playing on the flowers and insects."
CLOSE-UPS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Spider in a Web" by EDWARD SLATER. 'Photography has been a hobby since my teenage years. Having retired some years ago, photography has become my passion. Taking classes with Jack Wild has really taught me the Art of Seeing. The photo of the spider was taken at Mounts Botanical Garden with a Nikon D300 and a Nikon 105mm macro lens."
CLOSE-UPS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Baby Robins Looking to Take a Bite!" by INDIA ROEHRICH-HILL. "Just walking around looking for pictures to take because I had nothing better to do...I spot this nest and saw these cute little babies! Everyone always thinks they look like flowers to begin with, but they are just bright orange beaks! This is my prize winning picture so far and I cannot wait to take another brilliant and delightful picture of Mother Nature, considering I am only 13 with a digital camera!"
SCENICS, FIRST PLACE. "Grassy Waters Hammock" by HAROLD RUSLANDER. "It was taken on a canoe trip through Grassy Waters Preserve one evening as part of their organized activities. While paddling along I came upon this hammock with the cypress tree on it. I took the photo using the built in flash. It illuminated the tree while leaving the dark sky as a backdrop. Gave it a kind of eerie effect."
SCENICS, SECOND PLACE. "Woodland Sunrise" by BILL CLIFTON. "The photo originated early one morning when I was hiking a trail near my home to photograph an eagle’s nest. It was about 7:00 a.m. when the sun started breaking through the fog with its beams of light piercing through the fog. What a lucky morning!"
SCENICS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Where It All Began" by NANCY SHIROMA. "This photo was inspired by brother John Penrod, who passed away about a year ago from cancer. This is the last place (Lake Osborne) my son and I spent with him outside. I call the tree “John’s Tree” because of the memory. I started taking pictures after a point-and-shoot camera was given to me a couple of years ago. I pray while I take the pictures and really must give all and any credit to the Grace of God.
OCEANS, FIRST PLACE. "Just Another Fish in the Wall" by DOUGLAS KAHLE. "The bait ball was just outside the Lake Worth Inlet and just off Singer Island. When I got in the water, I witnessed about eight large Tarpon feeding on the bait ball. I spent about 3 hours in the water with the bait ball. The ocean is home to some of the most amazing events! We need to stop eating the creatures of the ocean and instead protect it."
OCEANS, SECOND PLACE. "Great Defense Always Beats Great Offense" by DOUGLAS KAHLE. " I've been diving nearly every weekend for a little over 10 years and I had never witnessed anything like this. As I descended on the reef, I saw the Green Moray eel swimming across the top of the reef with something in its mouth. The Eel swam for cover under the closest ledge; that is when I noticed it had a fully blown-up pufferfish in its mouth. The puffer was stuck in its mouth, and the eel started slamming the puffer against a rock to jar it loose from its mouth. It worked — the puffer popped out and swam away.
OCEANS, THIRD PLACE. "Shrimp Appetizer" by JUDY TOWNSEND. "I captured this photo of a squid with a shrimp in its mouth while doing a beach dive off Lauderdale-by-the-Sea last summer. I saw this squid with the shrimp trying to hide in some gorgonians. I was able to approach it and get some photos without it swimming away. I was really excited about this find because in all my years of diving and all my encounters with squid, this is the first time I have come across one with food in its mouth."
OCEANS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Boynton Beach Sunrise" by JOHN THARP. "This image was taken at the Boynton Beach Inlet in late March 2013. There was no particular reason I was there other than to test my new camera. I was using a Nikon D800 with a 17-35 lens. I decided on a long shutter exposure to give the water crashing over the rocks a smooth silky look and a more interesting foreground. While I did get a little drenched after this shot (ok, a lot drenched), it was well worth it."
OCEANS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Just Before Dawn" by STEVE DAPONTE. "This image was captured on January 3, 2013 at 6:44 a.m. using a 25-second exposure. I chose a long exposure time to give the seascape a calm, serene feel. I am ever so thankful to my wife who is my inspiration and so supportive of my journey into the art of photography. Thanks also goes to the support network and friends I have made since joining the Lighthouse Camera Club."
OCEANS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Kiss Me Momma" by STEVEN KARM. "The clear, warm waters of Three Sisters Spring make for the perfect winter residence of local manatees who are trying to stay warm. Here is a mother manatee with her baby exchanging a tender kiss."
OCEANS, HONORABLE MENTION. "Blue Hour" by RICHARD TAYLOR. "I’m a fan of vibrant colorful sunrises, so I was a little disappointed when I arrived at Coral Cove Park to find extremely overcast conditions. I knew this would be a very different style of photo for me — however, the low light allowed me to take extremely long exposures, and the dramatic skies and limited tonal range made a far more compelling image than many of the photos I’ve taken in more ideal lighting. It also helped me have a greater appreciation for the beauty of nature — rain or shine."
