‘Melting Away,’ Arctic iceberg. “融化”, 北極冰山

‘Melting Away,’ Camille Seaman’s photographs of fragile Arctic icebergs
Breaching iceberg, Greenland, August 8, 2008: I only made one exposure of this scene as the sea was a bit choppy and splashing. I am very lucky with overcast skies and when I saw this light and the gesture of the iceberg I was very excited. (© Camille Seaman)
Stranded icebergs detail II, Cape Bird, Antarctica, December 25 2006: it was a special treat to be in the zodiac with fellow photographer John Weller and John Palmer as our pilot. We casually cruised around these stranded icbergs (icebergs stuck on the rocky bottoms of the shallow coast). While we kept a safe distance we also had ample oppertunity to admire the subtle colors of algae in the ice; pinks, browns and pale greens. (© Camille Seaman)

The Wedge iceberg, Antarctica, January, 1, 2005: floating in open water, tabular icebergs the size of city blocks are the first sign as we travel south that we have crossed the Antarctic convergence, an invisible boundry where the warm Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet the cold Antarctic waters. (© Camille Seaman)
Bergy bits in Errera Channel, Errera Channel, Antarctic Peninsula, Dec. 2007: bergy bits are icebergs that may be no larger than a house. These three icbergs jammed like parked cars next to each other display the variety of shapes and personality that an iceberg might posess. (© Camille Seaman)
Floating icebergs in drift ice II, Ross Sea, Antarctica, December 2006: these two massive icebergs were lovely to observe. The sea had a strong swell and all of the ice including the drift ice was heaving up and down significantly as if it was breathing. The two bergs drifted towards each other and seemed as if they might collide. We were some miles away, so I could not judge very well as to whether they actually did or not. (© Camille Seaman)

The Different faces of time, Southern Greenland August 2008: Juan Carlos the expedition geologist tells me in an endearing heavy Colombian accent that the stone we are looking at is some of the oldest exposed granite on the planet. I am in awe as he gives its age as 3.66 billion years old. The glacier is a mere shadow of itâs former self, yet still it looms large over our small rubber zodiac boat. As the ice cracks, breaks, melts we call it retreat. It feels like something more. I feel small as I see the tiny boat with our passengers, against the blue ice which looks puny against the ancient stone. Stone that withstands in itâs own way the carving, the grinding bearing scars of itâs slow dance with the ice. (© Camille Seaman)
Bergy bits jammed up in Errera Channel, Antarctic Peninsula, Dec. 2007: Currents and tides draw many hundreds of bergy bits together in a massive sort of log jam. The weather was very foggy and the mountain behind was mostly obcured in the mist. (© Camille Seaman)
