Astronauts aboard the International Space Station photographed this striking view of Pavlof Volcano on May 18. The oblique perspective from the ISS reveals the three dimensional structure of the ash plume, which is often obscured by the top-down view of most remote sensing satellites.

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano

A cloud of ash belches out of Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano, about 55km from Mexico City, as seen from Paso de Cortes, in the Mexican central state of Puebla. Authorities have raised the alert level to “yellow phase three”, the fifth of a seven-stage warning system, restricting access to an area of 12km around the volcano while preparing evacuation routes and shelters.

Smoke rises from the Popocatépetl volcano as it spews incandescent volcanic material on the outskirts of Puebla, Mexico on Thursday.

A plume of ash and steam rise from the Popocatepetl volcano overshadowing the Catholic church in Santiago Xalizintla, Mexico. Just east of Mexico City, the volcano has spit out a cloud of ash and vapor 2 miles high over several days of eruptions. Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention raised the volcano alert from Stage 2 Yellow to Stage 3 Yellow, the final step before a Red alert, when possible evacuations could be ordered. Volcanic eruption, Mount Sakurajima, 2013. 火山噴發, 櫻島山

AUGUST 18: Smoke rises after an eruption of Mount Sakurajima in Kagoshima, Japan. The eruption on Sunday of the 3665 ft. high volcano, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, sent up a 16,404 ft.plume, the highest in recorded history. It is also the volcano's 500th eruption this year, according to media reports citing the local meteorological observatory. (Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory)
