The Philippines weather bureau downgraded Typhoon Maysak to a tropical storm as it continues to weaken while moving closer toward the country's eastern coast. The weather bureau says Maysak's strength is no longer capable of generating storm surges, but warned that it could generate surface waves of up to eight metres near the centre of the storm. The agency said Maysak can still generate moderate to heavy rains and urged residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes to be on alert against flash floods and landslides. (EPA/FRANCIS R.
