Nikolai Tsiskaridze with two of his most promising young students, Angelina Vorontsova and Denis Rodkin. Vorontsova and Rodkin say they have been docked pay and refused roles because of their loyalty to Tsiskaridze, who has been locked in a fierce dispute with the theater's management for several years over its choice of repertoire and other issues.

Nikolai Tsiskaridze plays the Evil Sorcerer in a performance of Swan Lake. Officials at the Bolshoi, including its general director, claim that Tsiskaridze was behind an acid attack in January against his long-time rival and Bolshoi artistic director, Sergei Filin. Tsiskaridze, who has been interrogated in connection with the attack—but not charged—denies the accusations.
