Villagers flee fighting in DR Congo — At least 130 people were killed, including 10 soldiers, in the deadliest clashes in months between troops and rebels in the restive eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the government said on July 15. Fierce fighting broke out on July 14 outside the flashpoint city of Goma between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels, an armed group launched by Tutsi former soldiers who mutinied in April 2012. The clashes continued on July 15 between Congolese armed forces and M23 rebels, causing several thousands of people to flee.

A man accused by the Congolese Army of being a spy of rebels of the M23 movement is tied and taken away on Tuesday in Munigi on the outskirts of Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The army in the Democratic Republic of Congo on July 16 pursued an offensive against rebels of the M23 movement to protect the North Kivu provincial capital of Goma. M23, a movement launched by Tutsi defectors from the army who accuse the Kinshasa government of reneging on a 2009 peace deal, last year occupied Goma for 10 days before pulling out under international pressure

hundreds of Congolese families spent a night without cover at the Bukanga refugee camp in Uganda as humanitarian organizations struggled to set up tents. The Congolese were displaced by fighting between the army and rebel group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) last week. They traveled to the Bukanga transit camp in Bundibugyo, 238 miles southwest of Uganda’s capital Kampala.
